Personal statement

I qualified in Madras Medical College, Madras (now Chennai), India in 1990 and completed 2 years of Orthopaedic training to gain a Diploma in Orthopaedics. After coming to the United Kingdom in 1993, I completed my Senior House Officer training and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1996. I entered Wessex Orthopaedic Registrar Rotation in 1997. During my training years, I was awarded a Fellowship by   AO  foundation at St.Clemens Hospital, Oberhausen, Germany for a month and I underwent a further 11 month Fellowship training in Shoulder and Sports Medicine at the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre, Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital, Devon.

I completed my training at Torbay Hospital and obtained a CCST (Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training) in Trauma and Orthopaedics in 2004. I was appointed as a Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics at Torbay Hospital in January  2005. Although I undertook treatment of all aspect of orthopaedic conditions in my initial few years as a consultant, I now specialise in managing shoulder and upper limb problems. I advocate minimally invasive key hole  surgery for many conditions with significant benefits to the patients including decreased post operative pain, accelerated recovery and minimal scarring.

I find problems around the shoulder fascinating. I am particularly interested in the rotator cuff (or the lack of it). The operations I do include shoulder  decompression, distal clavicle excision, calcium deposit removal, rotator cuff repair, shoulder stabilisation and frozen shoulder release etc by following principles of modern surgery and advance key-hole techniques. I perform shoulder replacements including reverse shoulder  replacements. I also perform surgeries around the elbow (like tennis elbow release), hand (like Dupuytren’s contracture release), peripheral nerve decompressions (like cubital tunnel release) and fracture fixations (including collar bone fractures).
